IPv6 Compression Rules

IPv6 addresses can be compressed by:

  • Removing leading zeros: 0001 becomes 1
  • Using double colon (::): Replace consecutive groups of zeros with ::
  • Only one compression: The :: can only appear once in an address

Examples

Expanded Compressed
2001:0db8:0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:0001 2001:db8::1
0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:0001 ::1
2001:0db8:0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:0000 2001:db8::
0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:0000 ::

Compression Priority

When multiple zero sequences exist, compress the longest sequence. If sequences are equal length, compress the leftmost one.

Important Notes

  • The double colon (::) represents one or more groups of zeros
  • You can only use :: once in an address
  • Leading zeros in hextets can always be removed
