How IPv6 Compression Works

IPv6 addresses can be compressed using these rules:

  • Leading zeros: Groups of zeros at the start of a hextet can be omitted (e.g., 0001 → 1)
  • Double colon (::): One or more consecutive groups of zeros can be replaced with ::
  • Only one :: The double colon can only appear once in an address

Examples

Compressed Expanded
2001:db8::1 2001:0db8:0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:0001
::1 0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:0001
2001:db8:: 2001:0db8:0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:0000
:: 0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:0000

Rules for Expansion

  1. Split the address into hextets (groups of 4 hexadecimal digits)
  2. Replace :: with enough :0000: groups to make 8 hextets total
  3. Pad each hextet to 4 characters with leading zeros
